Dung Beetles

The project seeks to broaden the variety of dung beetles in South Western Australia while studying their effectiveness for livestock producers.

The Dung Beetle Ecosystem Engineers project aims to:

  1. Improve soil in grazing systems

  2. Reduce the spread of diseases and insect pests, such as bush flies

  3. Increase pasture health

  4. Reduce nutrient run-off into waterways

Project Description:

The initiative expands on prior studies and aims to address gaps in the seasonal and geographic distribution of beetles in southern Australia. This will be achieved by introducing new species of dung beetles and enlarging the range of existing ones. The project will assess and communicate the ecosystem services and advantages that dung beetles offer to farmers in a measurable manner.
